Allegheny National Forest (ANF) - From A (Allegheny Reservoir) to Z (Zippo/Case Museum)
-Forest Invites Families to Leave the City Behind and Enjoy a Variety of Active and Educational Experiences in a Natural, Uncrowded Setting-

BRADFORD, PA, July 30, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- This summer Allegheny National Forest (www.visitANF.com) invites families to leave the city behind and enjoy a variety of active and educational experiences in a natural, uncrowded setting. The majestic Forest offers visitors over 513,000 acres of outdoor fun and sprawls over the four beautiful counties of McKean, Warren, Elk and Forest, Pennsylvania. Located along the northern tier of the state, the Allegheny National Forest is within a day's drive for more than one-third of the nation's population and is easily accessible from many locations in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Western New York and Ontario.

Linda Devlin, Executive Director of Allegheny National Forest Vacation Bureau notes, "Because the forest is so spread out and because it remains relatively undiscovered, visitors are able to immerse themselves in the beauty of their surroundings and have a true forest experience. First time visitors are always amazed by the size of the Forest, as well as how lush and green it is."

Miles of Trails with Stunning Views, a Variety of Wildlife and an Abundance of Rock Formations

"We are trail central," adds Devlin. "We have an extensive trail system for all skill levels." Simple scenic trails such as Timberdoodle Flats Interpretive Trail is perfect for casual hikers, parents with children or first-time birders, while Marilla Bridges Trail features a covered bridge, three rustic wooden trestle bridges and a gazebo. For those who want more of a challenge, Morrison Trail is a 10.8 mile loop trail with stunning views, a variety of wildlife and large rock formations. The North Country Trail is the longest hiking trail in the United States and is 4,600 miles long and stretches across seven states. The part of the trail that runs through the Allegheny National Forest is 96.6 miles long, making it the longest trail in the Forest. It provides vistas of the Allegheny Reservoir as it passes through rock outcroppings, open hardwoods, old growth forests and strands of Hemlock and is perfect for backpacking. In addition, the forest also features ATV, dirt bike, motocross, motorcycle, mountain bike and geocaching trails.

Allegheny Reservoir is the largest reservoir in the Forest, with more than 100 miles of shoreline. Families can enjoy swimming, fishing and boating and conveniences such as picnic areas, boat launches and a marina are also available. The southern most tips of the Red Bridge arm and Sugar Bay of the Allegheny Reservoir provide an excellent place for canoeing and kayaking. Willow Bay also features a beautiful area for boating, kayaking and canoeing and has a large easy access dock.

Accommodation Options Ranging from Well Maintained Campgrounds to the Luxury of Glendorn
For families who wish to extend their stay, there is a variety of accommodation ranging from primitive to plush. Allegheny National Forest has 16 campgrounds which include reservoir, primitive reservoir and non-reservoir campgrounds. Primitive cabin rentals that have electric but not water are located either along the reservoir or along the mountain streams at Willow Bay.

And for those who prefer rustic luxury, Glendorn (www.glendorn.com) is a premier four star all-inclusive lodge with private, deluxe accommodations and gourmet dining and has earned the distinction of being a Wine Spectator Award winner. The 1,280 acre estate offers numerous activities such as fly-fishing in the spring with an ORVIS-endorsed guide, guided float trips on the Clarion River, steel head fishing on Lake Erie, trap and skeet shooting, swimming, hiking on 17 miles of trails, biking, tennis, horseback riding and spa services. Allegheny National Forest sites and Glendorn are pet-friendly providing an extra value add and allowing four-legged friends to join in on the fun.

When the Weather Doesn't Cooperate
And in case the weather doesn't cooperate during their stay, families still have lots of options available to them. Some examples include the Eldred World War II Museum where they can see, feel and touch America's history; the Zippo/Case Museum where they can learn more about the invention of the Zippo lighter; and the Penn Brad Oil Museum where they can experience the region's oil boomtown history of riches lost and found.

"The beauty of this area is that there is such a variety of things to see and do, most at a relatively low price point," says Devlin. "Not only will families go home feeling relaxed and refreshed, they'll have learned some things along the way."
